How to start with acting skills

How to start with acting skills

Acting is about playing characters. Characters are people that are different from you. If you're playing Shrek, you have to be Shrek but you can't be you. It has to be different. Acting is about playing the characters that has been assigned to you. If you're a tom boy but now you're playing seductive Katy, you will need to learn how to play seductive Katy. Acting is about playing characters. You will need to research about those in order to play it out well.

Acting is about creating emotions that are appropriate for your characters. It will all depends on your character types. If your character is a business man, you will need to shows the emotions, gestures and languages that are associated with business man. If your character is a mean old woman, you will need to portray those too. You will need to know how to portray all the emotions, language, gestures associated with your characters. If you don't do it then it doesn't look like your character.

You have to walk, talk, feel, think like your character. This is acting. For example, a doctor would walk with his body erect and his tone of voice is loud and demanding. He is in charge. He tells his patients what to do. A homeless man will walk with his head droop down and he might talk in a quiet, tired tone of voice and he's not demanding. He's not in charge. Acting takes a lot of courage and freedom from within. It's hard to be an actor if you're courageous or have plenty of freedom from within. Acting will be very difficult for shy people. It's hard for shy people to open up. If you are going to act, you will need to open up more and be less restrictive. There will be exercise for you to do so that you won't be shy anymore. Acting can be fun and lucrative if you really prepare yourself for it.

In-Depth Bible Study Notes For Acts 28:1-10

In-Depth Bible Study Notes For Acts 28:1-10

This final chapter of Acts can be divided into three sections.

Verses 1-10 describes what happened after the shipwreck on the island of Malta.
Verses 11-16 describes Paul's arrival in Rome
Verses 17-31 describes how Paul preaches in Rome while under house arrest

Read Acts 28:1. Here we first learn that the island that they had shipwrecked on was Malta. This island was known as Melita by the Greeks and Romans and was considered part of the province of Sicily. It is 58 miles south of this larger island.

Read Acts 28:2. The word "islanders" in the Greek actually means "barbarians" or "non-Greek speakers." They were not uncivilized tribesmen, however; they were Phoenician and spoke a Phoenician dialect, but were thoroughly Romanized by this point. Luke points out that it is rainy and cold: remember this is either late October or early November. Now, from our "modern" view point it might not seem very hospitable to simply make a fire to warm shipwreck victims, we would expect them to take people into their homes, but we need to remember the details of the shipwrecked victims here: there were 276 men, too many for a single household to manage, and many of these were prisoners, which could not be separated from their guards. A single large temporary camp, therefore, makes sense. I would expect that the islanders also shared their food and water.

Read Acts 28:3. As I have read this story many times, what jumped out at me was not at first the story of the viper biting Paul, but rather the fact that Paul, after all that he went through, is out gathering brushwood to put on the fire! You have to really like this man. He clearly does not see himself beyond doing manual labor, even though he had just been vindicated as a prophet. After all, everything that he had predicted -- that the ship would be destroyed, that all aboard would be saved - had come true.

Luke uses the term "viper" which indicates that the islanders recognized the snake as being poisonous.

Read Acts 28:4. The islanders response actually makes some sense. They would have known that some of the shipwrecked men were prisoners under Roman guard and would have probably realized that Paul, himself, was a prisoner. To have escaped certain death by shipwreck, only to be bitten by a viper - he must be a murderer and deserve to die.

In my Bible "Justice" is capitalized and I was surprised that my commentary didn't make any note of that. It made me wonder whether they Phoenicians believed in a god of Justice, just like there were supposedly gods of Love, War, Fertility, etc.

Read Acts 28:5. Look at how calmly Paul reacts! He knows that God is with him and that he will arrive safely in Rome. Here's this snake hanging from his hand and he just shakes it off into the fire! Paul was also probably aware of one of the promises Jesus made about believers and snakes, given after his resurrection and before he ascended to heaven. Read Mark 16:17-18. Unfortunately there have been snake-handling cults built around these verses, which is incredibly sad. God clearly doesn't want us wasting our time picking up venomous snakes, just for the sake of proving His promises true! I would like to read about some more contemporary examples of how God has protected people from snakes & poison from "Like a Mighty Wind." { Read "Like a Mighty Wind", pg. 40-42 }

Read Acts 28:6. The islanders, of course, expect Paul to be incapacitated or even killed out right from the poison, but nothing happens. They realized, then, that there is something supernatural about him and believe instead of a murderer he is a god. There is another story in "Like a Mighty Wind" which I'd like to read which describes how another group of unchurched people have a similar reaction; this group, however, intentionally poisoned the believers! { Read "Like a Mighty Wind", pg. 42-43 } I think this second story helps to explain why God allowed a viper to bite Paul: so that the islanders could see this miracle, realized that there was something supernatural about Paul, and therefore be open to the gospel.

Read Acts 28:7. It is unclear here whether the "us" mentioned is Luke and Paul and a couple of Paul's guards, or whether all 276 men were welcomed at Publius' estate. My sense is that Publius, being the man of highest authority on the island, would have heard about Paul's miracle with the viper and perhaps was curious to learn more. Publius is a Roman name, but a first name only, not a family name. In any case, he shows hospitality and Paul is in his home for three days. We don't know anything more about him beyond what is mentioned in this chapter.

Read Acts 28:8-9. You have to say that God is truly good! God takes the disobedience of the sailors and the Roman soldiers (remember, they refused to listen to Paul when he warned them that it was unsafe to sail) and turns it into something good for the islanders. Because of the shipwreck Paul comes to Malta and all these people are healed. We have no specific mention of people coming to Christ as a result, but I don't see why they wouldn't have. I believe one of the purposes of miracles is to get people's attention. Once they saw that Paul's God was the Real God, with the power to heal the sick, I would think they would be open to hearing about Jesus.

Read Acts 28:10. I think it is pretty clear that the reason that all the men of the shipwrecked were blessed in this manner was because of Paul and how God was using him. When the time came for them to leave the island, they left with plenty of supplies, which they wouldn't have had, without the islanders' generosity.

In Depth Bible Study Notes For Acts 27:13-26

In Depth Bible Study Notes For Acts 27:13-26

We now move into the second section of this chapter; here we see the storm Paul predicted.

Read Acts 27:13. At first it appears that everything is going to be OK - the sailors get that nice gentle south wind they want to sail along the coast. But the sea, as we will see, is always unpredictable.

Read Acts 27:14-15. Now they are facing a fierce wind sweeping down from the north which blows them south and away from Crete - way off course. Apparently this was like a typhoon in strength - there was nothing they could do to go against it; they could only be driven along.

Read Acts 27:16-17. My commentary does a good job of providing more information about these two verses. "Cauda. About 23 miles from Crete. This provided enough shelter to make preparation against the storm. to make the lifeboat secure. A small boat was being towed behind the ship. It was interfering with the progress of the ship and with the steering. It may also have been in danger of being crushed against the ship in the wind and the waves. It had to be taken aboard

(v. 17).  passed ropes under the ship. Probably crosswise, in order to keep the ship from being broken apart by the storm. Syrtis. A long stretch of desolate banks of quicksand along northern Africa off the coast of Tunis and Tripoli--still far away, but in such a storm the ship could be driven a great distance. sea anchor. Lowered apparently to keep the ship from running onto the sandbars of Syrtis, but the Greek for this expression should perhaps be rendered "mainsail.""  { Ask group to find Cauda &  Syrtis on the flannel map }

Read Acts 27:18-19. As we will read later, they did not throw all the cargo (grain) overboard at this point, but obviously did get rid of some. The ship's tackle would have consisted of Spars, planks and perhaps the yardarm with the mainsail attached.

Read Acts 27:20. This was not a storm that lasted a few hours, did some damage, and was gone. No, this literally raged for days, the storm so fierce that they could not even see the sun or stars. I can't even imagine how terrifying this must have been, caught in a wooden ship in the midst of the ocean in such weather.

Read Acts 27:21. I think that through all this only Paul had any sense of security and confidence. After all, God had promised him that he would reach Rome and be His witness there. Read Acts 23:11. He knew he would survive, but no one else on the ship, Luke included (as we read in the previous verse) believed they would escape this. Paul says "Men, you should have taken my advice"; though this is a ship and there would have been a chain of command among the sailors, just as the centurions would have had authority over the soldier, we know from verse 12 that the decision to sail from Fair Havens was a majority decision. Re-read verse Acts 27:12. The other prisoners, of course, would not have had any say, but the soldiers and sailors would have. It says here that the men had gone a long time without food. As we will read later, this was not because they didn't have food, but rather because the storm was so violent that eating was neither easy nor probably pleasant, because of sea sickness.

Paul now shares the good news of what God has told him, through an angel. Read Acts 27:22-26. So none of the men would die, Paul promised, but the ship would be destroyed. I'm sure God knew exactly how much these men could take and knew that they needed some hope to keep them from falling into utter despair and perhaps doing something suicidal, hence why He sent the angel to Paul.

Bible Study Lesson For Acts 11:1-18

Bible Study Lesson For Acts 11:1-18

This chapter can be divided into two sections.

Verses 1-18 consists primarily of Peter retelling the story of Cornelius as described in chapter 10 because he is criticized for accepting Gentiles into the church.
Verses 19-30 describes the birth and growth of the church in Antioch.

Read Acts 11:1-3. When I read these verses I had to laugh - there really, truly is nothing new under the sun! Something good happens - Gentiles have received the word of God - but there is always someone who has to criticize how that good came about and whether or not it is really good! To give the Jewish Christians credit here, they had been abiding by the Jewish laws regarding circumcision and clean/unclean food their entire lives; they were raised to believe that Gentiles were unclean and that their food was unclean and that for a godly Jew to eat their food and to be in their houses was to be disobedient to God.

To us it probably seems a bit silly, but to them it was very serious stuff. Up to this point it had seemed that the good news was following a particular pattern: you were a Jew or converted to Judaism, then you accepted Christ. Or, if you accepted Christ, you had to convert to the legal requirements of Judaism (circumcision, diet, etc.) This trend toward legalism is going to rear its ugly head multiple times in the New Testament. We will see it presented overtly in Acts 15. Here's a preview: Read Acts 15:1-2. Paul will talk about our freedoms (and responsibilities) as Christians in regards to diet in Romans. Read Romans 14:19-23, and about holy days in Colossians 2:16-17. I do not doubt that such freedoms would have seemed very strange to the Jewish Christians (though perhaps not to the Gentiles, who were probably not raised under such strict guidelines) and would have taken some getting used to.

{ Discussion questions: Can you think of examples of legalism that you have seen crop up in the church today? What are we supposed to do if we are interacting with a brother/sister who has different beliefs about what the Christian walk is supposed to look like? What are we supposed to do if our home church/denomination puts requirements on us, as individuals, which we don't agree with? }

Peter defends his actions by retelling the story of the previous chapter. Read Acts 11:4-14. In verse 14 we are given a little more information than what was told in chapter 10, the angel tells Cornelius that he and his household will be saved. The term "household" includes not only Cornelius' family, but also his slaves, and any servants/employees that worked for him.

Read Acts 11:15. Peter's audience would have understood that "the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning" meant that the Gentiles spoke in tongues, just like the Jews had at Pentecost.

Read Acts 11:16. Peter is reminding his audience of what is recorded in Acts 1:4-5.

Read Acts 11:17-18. Peter makes it clear that he believes that God intervened divinely on behalf of the Gentiles and that there was no way he was going to oppose God's will. After all, only God could have given Cornelius and his family the gift of the Holy Spirit. His audience agrees and accepts that Gentiles, too, can be believers, without first converting to Judaism. This was a major victory and a major step for the church. (Though as we will see, there will be times of backsliding in the future. Read Galatians 2:11-16.)

The rest of this chapter talks about the birth and growth of the church in Antioch.

Know what Zadroga act is all about?

Know what Zadroga act is all about?

Article by Ethen William

As you all know that 11th September 2001 is supposed to be the worst day in the memory of New York residents because on this day there was a major terrorist took place in which buildings of World Trade Centre and Pentagon were collapsed down. The presence of toxins in the debris of building spreads various respiratory diseases amongst people who were engaged in rescue and ground zero clearance operations. There were many people who have lost their life due to the occurrence of this act and some of them are still suffering because of it. Zadroga act was being passed by the house of U.S representatives and U.S Senate in 2010 and later on it declared as a law on 2nd Jan 2011.

Zadroga health and compensation fund was reopened to compensate the victims who have suffered during 9/11 act from respiratory diseases. They can only avail the advantage of this fund if they succeed in hiring the services of a skillful lawyer who can deal with such issues easily. Incase you are one of those victims who are going through financial crisis due to this act then they must file compensation claim under Zadroga act.

During 9/11 act there are a large number of victims who suffer from huge financial and physical loss which occurred due to the presence of toxins in scar remains of the buildings. Only few of them are aware of the advantages of Zadroga act but the people who do not know how to tackle with it they need to take the support of a lawyer in this regard. There were many people who came forward for rescue operations during the act but James Zadroga was the first responder amongst all. He died due to respiratory diseases Zadroga act was being passed after his name for the welfare of 9/11 victims. It was all due to the toxins present in the debris of building like mercury, lead, asbestos and polyvinyl chloride. Amongst all of these elements asbestos is supposed to be the most dangerous one which causes mesothelioma to the people engaged in rescue and cleaning operations. With the help of Zadroga act one can surely cover up the financial loss occurred during the act.

As you all know that Zadroga law has been passed recently so every lawyer would consume some time to hold a command over it. People who are unknown to the benefits of Zadroga act must grab some information about it online. Moreover, there are a large number of seminars and conferences being organized to make victims familiar with their rights. Zadroga health and compensation act of 2010 was being passed for providing financial and mental support to the victims of 9/11 act. Workers and officers who were engaged in cleaning and rescue operations suffered from fatal diseases like mesothelioma due to constant exposure to asbestos products.

At the end, one can easily conclude from the above information that under Zadroga act victims can get required amount of compensation from the liable person or firm.

Ethen William is a famous writer and shares his knowledge on compensation claims and law. If you want to know more about Zadroga law, Zadroga attorney, Zadroga lawyer, Zadroga act, Zadroga claim, Zadroga claim

In-Depth Bible Study Notes for Acts 7:44-60

In-Depth Bible Study Notes for Acts 7:44-60

One of the accusations brought against Stephen was that he preached "against this holy place" (the temple), so he concludes his defense by speaking about the sanctuary. Though we don't have any of his other speeches recorded, we can probably assume that he had been preaching that the risen Christ had now replaced the temple as the mediation of God's saving presence among his people and as the one (the "place") through whom they (and "all nations,") could come to God in prayer.

Read Acts 7:44. Stephen calls the desert tabernacle the "tabernacle of the Testimony" because its primary contents were the two covenants tablets (on which were written the Ten Commandments) called "the Testimony." The Hebrew word for "testimony" is related to the Babylonian word for "covenant stipulations." The term "ark of the covenant" is the same as "the ark of the Testimony" or "the tabernacle of the Testimony."

Read Acts 7:45-47. Stephen reminds his audience of how the ark traveled with the Jews, without a permanent place, until the time of King Solomon, who built the first temple. I think Stephen mentions this, in part, because there was a time in Jewish history were God's presence was NOT limited to this particular temple building. Neither Joshua nor David worshipped God in a temple, but they were blessed and guided by God anyway.

Read Acts 7:48-50. Stephen reminds them that God is the Creator and does not live in a house made by man. He quotes from another prophet, Isaiah, as support. Ultimately God makes His own temple; He decides where He will dwell. It is Stephen's belief (and all Christians') that Jesus became the new temple (the new house of God's presence) and that all people can come to God, now, through Jesus. As we read earlier, Jesus explicitly states He is the true temple. Read John 2:19-22.

Read Acts 7:51. Stephen doesn't pull any more punches, no more dancing around: after listing many of past sins of the Jews he tells his audience "you are just like your fathers (ancestors)!" He calls them stiff-necked, which means rebellious. Moses, too, called his generation stiff-necked. Read Deuteronomy 31:24-27.

Stephen also calls his audience "uncircumcised" in their hearts and ears. They were physically circumcised, but they lived like the pagan nations around them - they were not consecrated to the Lord. His audience was so proud to be Jewish, but they refuse to acknowledge the sin of their nation's past or to see how they were following in those sinful footsteps. As a brief rabbit trail, to call a Jewish man "uncircumcised" was a great insult. This was a term you used to insult pagans. Read 1 Samuel 17:26, Isaiah 52:1. Leviticus also talks about "uncircumcised hearts." Read Leviticus 26:40-42.

Read Acts 7:52-53. Jesus accused the Jewish leaders of being responsible for the deaths of the prophets, as well. Read Luke 11:46-51. Jesus uses the expression "from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah" to summarize the history of martyrdom in the Old Testament. The prophets who were killed were not killed by pagans, they were killed by their fellow Jews. And these were the same prophets that the Jews of the present generation claimed to revere - yet their ancestors murdered them. "They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One." I believe that one of the prophets Stephen is speaking of here is Isaiah. Tradition says that he was killed by being sawn in two, by order of King Manasseh.

Stephen strikes home one last blow: you murdered the Messiah, you who claim to honor and love the Law. You are no different or better than your forefathers, who murdered the prophets.

Read Acts 7:54. Though everything Stephen told them was truth and well presented and backed up with Old Testament references, their hearts are so hard, and so proud. Their only response is fury.

Read Acts 7:55-56. I think God gave Stephen this vision, in part, to give him comfort in what was to follow, his own martyrdom. Jesus uses this title of "Son of Man" to emphasize that He is a fulfillment of Messianic predictions. Read Daniel 7:13-14, Matthew 25:31-33. He also claims that He will sit at the right hand of God, therefore being made second in authority to God Himself. Read Matthew 26:64. Stephen, here, sees the fulfillment of Jesus' promise earlier than the rest of us.

Read Acts 7:57-58. There is no orderly finish to this trial, no official announcement of guilt. The orderly court of the Sanhedrin turns into a mob scene. The fact that people lay their clothes at the feet of Saul could be an indication that Saul is in charge of the execution. At the very least it is clear that Saul supports, whole-heartedly, Stephen's killing.

Read Acts 7:59-60. All I can say is that if I ever have to face something similar I can only pray that God can give me the strength and grace to be as loving and forgiving as Stephen. It is one thing to know you are going home to God, which does take a mighty faith; it is something else, it seems to me, to forgive those who are sending you there. Stephen's words are remarkably like Jesus', when He hung on the cross. Read Luke 23:34.

Stephen is the first Christian martyr. There will be hundreds of thousands more, if not millions, before the Lord's return.

Blessings!

In-Depth Bible Study Notes for Acts 2:4-13: Some Notes About Speaking in Tongues

In-Depth Bible Study Notes for Acts 2:4-13: Some Notes About Speaking in Tongues

I recently taught a Bible study covering the book the Acts of the Apostles. I used my mother's Ryrie Study Bible to provide the basic outline of the Bible study.

{Before reading this passage, ask the reader to pause at each proper name so that we can find the place on the map(s)} Read Acts 2:4-13. In this particular case, the tongues being spoken are actual languages, unknown to the speakers, but understood by the hearers. We are given a long list of all the different countries and languages represented by the Jews celebrating the Pentecost Festival. Notice that also "proselytes" or "converts" are mentioned. These are Gentiles who have converted to Judaism; apparently this wasn't as rare as one would expect. The Pharisees, we know, were active in seeking converts. Read Matthew 23:15.

The gift of tongues (also called glossolalia) was particularly relevant here where people of so many different nationalities and languages were gathered. It would have been a dramatic, earth shaking way to catch their attention and open up their hearts to hear what God had to say. The purpose of the gift here, clearly, was for the unbeliever.

Mel Tari's church also experiences a similar tongues gifting, and just like in Acts, known languages were spoken, and it became a witness for the unbelievers who came because of the signs of fire and the noise.  {Read "Like a Mighty Wind", pp. 26, "The two pastors in front were so scared..." to pp. 27 "... there was more than one thousand in our church that night from all over town."}

For a Christian to speak in a language that he or she doesn't know but someone else (a native speaker) recognizes is not all that uncommon. I could probably share numerous examples, but will just read two more, out of a different book. { Read "They Speak with Other Tongues" by John L. Sherrill, pp. 107 } In all these cases, it appears clear that the gift of tongues was giving as a witness for people in the congregation.

There is a lot of debate and controversy surrounding tongues.  I believe that there are different kinds of tongues and that some kinds of tongues are private, to be used in personal prayer and worship, to build up the individual.  I call this one's "personal prayer language."  Sometimes, when you are praying, you can't find the words to express what is going on inside or perhaps you don't know why you need to pray.  I think this is a fulfillment of Romans 8:26-27.  The Holy Spirit knows what needs to be said, so He takes over and does the speaking for me.  The tongues we have mentioned in Acts 2 and in my examples from the two contemporary books so far are clearly of the public kind, for building up the church.  For examples of this private kind, I'll read a passage from Billy Graham's book on the Holy Spirit.  { Read example of personal prayer tongues from "The Collected Works of Billy Graham:  The Holy Spirit", pp. 481 }

I do not consider myself an expert on tongues and what exactly the Holy Spirit Baptism is, so I have decided to "cheat" by summarizing and quoting material on the subject from a theologian I greatly admire, Billy Graham.  He is also a man that Christians from all denominations respect and trust, so I would tend to feel what he has to say has merit.  He does not speak in tongues, but most would agree he is a "spirit-filled" man and has a great reverence for what the Bible says.  { Read Not an expert from "The Collected Works of Billy Graham:  The Holy Spirit", pp. 482 }

Firstly, Billy Graham believes that the Baptism with the Holy Spirit occurs during conversion, that is, when the believer accepts Christ.  { Read Baptism with the Holy Spirit happens at conversion from "The Collected Works of Billy Graham:  The Holy Spirit", pp. 367-368 }

There is disagreement about this.  { Read Tongues is the expected sign, for some from "The Collected Works of Billy Graham:  The Holy Spirit", pp. 369 }

These different opinions, Billy Graham believes, could primarily just be semantics and that there is more unity within the Church among the different denominations than is sometimes demonstrated.  { Read Semantics from "The Collected Works of Billy Graham:  The Holy Spirit", pp. 369-370 }

So what does Billy Graham think about tongues?  He tells a story describing how there are probably three sources of tongues.  {Read Three sources of tongues from "The Collected Works of Billy Graham:  The Holy Spirit", pp. 481-482}

As one would expect, he presents the Biblical data we, as believers, have about tongues. Tongues (or glossolalia) is mentioned only in Acts and 1 Corinthians. As I've already hinted at, the word seems to be used in two different ways. The first way we've already discussed, the tongues of Pentecost. After describing what happens at Pentecost (which included the believers being filled with the Spirit and speaking in tongues), he takes a short side trip to give examples in the Bible where the term "filled with the Holy Spirit" is used, but not associated with speaking in tongues. Read Luke 1:14-15. We have no record that John the Baptist ever spoke in tongues. Read Acts 4:8. Peter preaches, he does not speak in tongues. Read Act 9:17-19. There is no mention of Paul (formerly Saul) spoke in tongues at this time. We also have an example of where tongues came upon a group of people, but the words used to describe the Spirit's actions were different. Read Acts 19:6. Here the "Spirit came upon them" not "they were filled with the Spirit."

Billy Graham describes what happened at Pentecost as a "divine miracle", something specially designed and presented by God as a way to reach the thousands of unbelievers present. He notes in another passage (I forgot to footnote it!) that there is no mention of the 3,000 people who repent and come to Christ after Peter's first sermon spoke in tongues, only that they were baptized. Read Acts 2:41.

The tongues mentioned in 1 Corinthians appears to be a different kind of tongues than the tongues seen at Pentecost. Read 1 Corinthians 12:7-11, 27-31.

From this passage we can pull out some facts and make some logical assumptions: 1) Tongues is a gift. 2) Not everyone receives all the spiritual gifts. 3) One can be filled with the Spirit and not speak in tongues. 4) There is an interpretation gift, which implies these tongues are not known human languages.

Billy Graham goes on to give a series of observations (some warnings) about tongues. I've tried to pull out only those which we have not already discussed or touched on.

He could not find any Biblical basis to support the view that tongues were meant only for the New Testament time and therefore not a valid gift for today.

Tongues is a gift of the Holy Spirit, not a fruit of the Spirit, as listed in Galatians 5:22-23. Gifts are distributed to believers at God's hand; all believers should seek the fruits. No one is a "second rate" Christian because he or she doesn't have a particular spiritual gift.

Tongues is clearly one of the least important gifts of the Spirit and can not be seen as a sign of spiritual maturity.

Corrie Ten Boom spoke in tongues, but she never talked about it or discussed it and in fact rebuked others who focused too much on the subject.

Christians from a wide range of denominations, both Pentecostal and non, speak or have spoken in tongues (including Lutherans, Anglicans, Baptists, and Roman Catholics). This confirms this is a gift of the Spirit.

The gift of tongues can easily be abused and lead to the following dangers:

Spiritual pride; a sense of superiority over non-tongue speakers

Divisiveness in the church; trying to force one's views (either pro or con) onto others in the Body, rather than accepting other's differences in love.

Imbalance; tongues becomes the focus of one's spiritual life and other gifts (and more importantly) and/or fruits of the Spirit are forgotten. A tongue obsessed person may forget about leading others to Christ or living a holy life and put all his energy into convincing others he must speak in tongues to grow in the Lord.

See a tongue experience as a short cut to spiritual power and maturity.  { Read Shortcut from "The Collected Works of Billy Graham:  The Holy Spirit", pp. 489 }

Counterfeits; there are documented cases of demon-possessed people being able to speak in other human languages, not familiar to the person possessed. Also, because of peer pressure, immature Christians might "fake" tongues by speaking in a language they know, but is unfamiliar to their peers, in order to be accepted.

To be continued...

Plan Before You Act

Plan Before You Act Life is made up of choices and actions. Your every action creates a wave in the fabric of social and emotional relationships between people. Your every choice has a consequence. Look at the word "consequence" It is derived from a word in Latin, "consequentem" which means "follow after." After our every choice, comes a sequence of events connected to our choice. To achieve your goals you must have an action plan that tries to contain every possible consequence of your choice and actions.

Think of a man who stays home 24 hours a day and never goes out. You may think that he doesn't make choices or the waves of his actions don't intersect with those of other people. This is what he wants, his reason of not going outside. In fact staying in is his choice and his inaction changes the fabric of the future. We can write a lot of scenarios according to his inaction. In one scenario he doesn't go out and therefore he can't save a kid from a car accident. In another, he goes out the car hits him instead of the kid. Everything you can imagine is a possibility and inaction is a variable as strong as action. Therefore while making plans to achieve your goals you must always remember the inaction as an option.

Here is a real life example for you. Let's say you are an investor and you have invested a large amount in the stock market. Everything is going well, the value of your equities are rising. One day an earthquake hits California and all the communication is broken with the region. Most investors would start to sell their stocks and the prices would fall. The next day, when the news arrives that there was no serious damage in California and only the communication lines and satellite network had a break down, they would start to buy back to salvage their losses. If you used the inaction card in this situation, first you didn't lose anything and second your stocks gained value because of the other panicked investors.

This was just a financial example. It never helps to beat yourself up while waiting for a telephone call. In every aspect of life there are moments inaction is the best way of action. However those moments are not frequent. Therefore your action plan must be filled with possible actions for possible conditions. You must know what to do in every turn of your plan. If your goal is promotion, you might make a plan to take out your rival by making his mistakes known to your boss. Even if you try to keep your actions secret from your rival, he may learn what you did. So you must have a plan for both of the situations. To achieve your goals you must be very well prepared. If you make fun of the people who take their umbrellas every time they go out, from now on start to think twice before laughing at them. If it rains one day they could be the ones that laugh at you.

The Mills Act

The Mills Act

Maybe you haven't put a lot of time into thinking about buying historical property in the state of California. What if you knew that you could get significant tax breaks from the state for 10 years if you did?

The Mills Act is little known by many people, yet it's been in existence since 1972 when the state senator from San Diego, James Mill, introduced and got passed the act that's in his name. What it does is gives a tax benefit on historical structures from 40 to 60% to encourage owners to spend the savings rehabilitating their homes. The property-tax savings are based in part on the owner's income and how much is spent to maintain the property.

Owners who enter into the 10-year agreement with their local governments must actively maintain the historical integrity of their properties. You can update it in some fashion, but the main purpose is to help the property maintain its historical perspective.

The original law stated that owners had to open their homes to the public for so many days a year to maintain the deal, along with it being a 20 year contract, but the visitors regulation was thrown out and, of course, the term years was reduced.

Each community gets to designate which homes it believes are qualified to receive benefits from the Mills Act. People are expected to follow through with the agreements also, at the risk of some pretty stiff penalties, which not only include adding the taxes back but penalties on top of 12.5% of the homes current market value. That assessment also is attached if either the city or the owner decides to opt out of the program for any other reason.

The only drawbacks to this program are that you can't do anything outrageous to the house, or actually, the property, since historical commercial property is included in this act.

Many people purchase commercial properties and turn them into museums that they open to the public for different uses, such as to just show the house, or to use to show their own art or the art of others.

In any case, you can't overly modify these homes. You can do restoration efforts such as modernizing windows, changing the floors or carpets and updating wallpaper, but the style has to be as it was in its past. You can't add new things that drastically alter the appearance, such as sunroofs, saunas, and the like, but you can add touches like air conditioning, fans, and different types of lighting.

One of the best things about the Mills Act is that the terms are transferable. Therefore, if you purchased a property and did the updates, you can turn it around and sell it to someone else, and they'll benefit from the tax breaks. Selling a house might be easier because of the reduction of the taxes for the potential buyer.

What's needed to get consideration for this tax break is minimal. Here it is:

• Mills Act Contract Application
• A completed financial analysis for the Mills Act contract form (the final financial analysis is prepared by the County Assessor's Office)

The following must be prepared by a specialist in historic preservation:

• An architectural report identifying the status of all character defining features of the building(s) and site (photographs required)
• A restoration/rehabilitation plan for the designated property.
• A maintenance list to be submitted to support the need for tax relief

That's it. The Act makes the process very simple to follow and to process. So, if you're thinking about buying property in California, this is something to consider that might help make purchasing an older home affordable.

Acting Tips on Memorizing Lines

Acting Tips on Memorizing Lines

Here's one acting tip - acting is not about learning lines. Yet actors often worry about memorizing lines, so below is some information on when you need to know your lines and the best way to avoid drawing a blank.

It depends on whether you have to do a monologue, a prepared scene or a cold reading.

you have to know your lines perfectly. Casting directors assume you've worked on your monologue for a long time and expect you to have it down. If you don't know your monologue like the back of your hand, you could easily draw a blank once you feel the added stress of auditioning. That's not a situation you want to be in, but if you do fumble a line at an audition, here's an important acting tip – don't stop acting. Say the line over if you can or just move on, but don't apologize and don't break the fourth wall. Act the way you would if this happened on stage and the casting director will know you're a professional.

, you don't have to know your lines by heart, but you should be very familiar with them. If you can memorize the scene, that's better of course, but always keep a copy of it in your hand no matter what. That way, you won't have to interrupt your acting if you do forget a line, plus it reminds the casting director that your audition is a work in progress, not the polished performance you would give if you got the part. Here's an acting tip for film auditions – keep the hand you hold your script with steady to avoid annoying shuffling paper noises being picked up by the camera.

]]>

no one will expect you to know your lines, but try to show up early at the audition so you can read the scene over several times. The more familiar you are with the lines, the more you'll be able to focus on your acting and not the words. Here's a cold reading acting tip – slide your thumb down the paper as you read your scene. This way, you'll have a mark for your next line and you'll be able to look up during your audition without breaking the flow of your scene.

Naturally, once you nail the audition and get the job, it's time to memorize your lines.

It depends on the type of person you are. Some actors do better if they work on the acting first because once they know what motivates their character to speak, memorization is easy. Other actors prefer to get the memorization part of the way so they can concentrate on their acting.

Try these different acting tips and methods and see what works for you.

That's what Anthony Hopkins does. He writes each line three times. By the third time, he feels he's committed the line to memory. Writing your lines down will help you process and memorize them.

It's easier to learn words when you hear them, so read your lines out loud over and over while you figure out the subtext of your script. Try to read without any specific intonation so you don't fall into a rhythm that will keep you from being spontaneous when you act. When you're ready to test yourself, record the other characters' lines, leaving enough space for your dialogue. Run lines with everyone you can (friends, roommates, family…)

If you rehearse your scenes every day, working on your objectives and connecting with your partner, most of your lines will eventually come naturally because you will have worked out the impulse that makes your character say the line. The legendary acting teacher Stella Adler called this "experiencing" the lines. Actually, if there's a few lines you just can't seem to get right, those could be clues into things you haven't figured out about your character yet.

Here's one last thing about learning lines – it gets easier the more you do it!

Is Drink ACT a Legitimate Business Opportunity?

Is Drink ACT a Legitimate Business Opportunity?

Article by Eric Weathersby

Generally people who call Drink ACT a scam, or fraud are individuals who have failed to build a successful network marketing business or any other business for that matter. They are usually people who fail and blame the organization, or the products, or their up-line for their own lack of personal success. The facts are that 95% of distributors fail because they never learn how to market themselves. This opportunity has nothing to do with that.

Mike Dillard said it best in his book Magnetic Sponsoring that "Unfortunately this is an industry of business ownership pursued by people who have never been business owners." So their is a steep learning curve that one must go through, not only in business terms, but in self-image, confidence, belief and mental maturity. In Drink ACT as well as all other network marketing companies this learning curve will apply.

To be honest, the MLM network marketing company that you may want to partner with does matter a little bit - I would say about 5% of your achievement is dependent on it. However 5% can make or break your possibility of doing well ever. There are a few things to look for when considering joining any multilevel marketing or network marketing company like Drink ACT so that you can make an informed decision whether or not a company is right for you.

Are some or all the co-founders experienced or expert network marketers? If none of them has nowhere in the past built an excellent MLM downline, that is certainly a warning sign. It only denotes they don't know what it means to be on the field as a network marketer and may not have your best interest in mind.

When it comes to sponsoring in to a Drink ACT business, did you notice that earlier I said "marketing themselves" rather than the original way of marketing your opportunity. If you wish to be the best in the Drink ACT Business, you'll need only to brand and market yourself like a leader and a specialist.

You, by default now understand a lot more than the majority of the remainder of the population. Therefore you are now considered a financial freedom expert irrespective of if you have made anything yet. You become more of a leader when you continue to keep adding value to yourself with self improvement and enhancement reading.

Now the true answer to success in Drink ACT is to share everything in regards to you and everything you are learning when you develop together with the world, especially with the other network marketers or at least someone taking an enthusiastic look into a home-based business. Newsflash! Almost all of your friends network do not fall in this category. No wonder 95% of all network marketers are failing.

Most companies, even Drink ACT, offer a replicated website to their representatives. Those cookie cutter websites do not brand you as being a leader. They brand the company and it simply tells most prospects that Drink ACT sold you on there site and now you are trying to sell them on the scam. They're just good to order the services or products for your customers.

Financial freedom through Drink ACT will come from making income off others efforts. It is sponsoring. Sponsoring effortlessly is realistic by luring leaders by becoming a leader. The key to success in Drink ACT is to learn how to build a list by attraction, building a relationship with your list and monetizing that list. With attraction marketing, you'll make money regardless of whether they join your Drink ACT business or not.

Should you consider joining Drink ACT, learn to market first. 95% of potential business partners including your closest friends and family will say no to your Drink ACT business. Internet marketing will reopen flood gates of prospects for you personally. There are 2.5 billion prospects online daily. If you are already in the business, will that make a difference in the possibility of success or at least for your team, if you're having success already?

Drink ACT is a Fantastic Company built on a rock solid foundation with a great management team, outstanding industry leaders and an amazing compensation plan. If you are considering joining Drink ACT I strongly encourage you to do so but learn to market YOURSELF as a leader and you will be successful!

Tips if Your Kid Wants to Try Acting

Tips if Your Kid Wants to Try Acting

Perhaps your own childwantsto be an actor and if this is what the child really wants what you can do as a parent to give your support. But acting as a child may not be as simple as it is with adults. Here are some helpful hints if your childwants to go into acting:

1. Make sure your child really wants to go acting because you don't want to waste your time or money. Some parents may impose their own dreams on their childrenbecause they had hang-ups. Be sure that it is your child whowants to join the school play or the movies and not you just seeing yourself in your little one.

2. Help your child prepare to act.You are the adult and you understand things better than your child. Help your childto know what the role is about. Explain to him or her who the character is, what they do, and where they are going. Add bits and pieces of information that can help your childinternalize the role well.

3. Notice signs your childisbecoming tired or restless.Children are less able to manage stress than most adults and you should be able to notice if the acting is taking a toll of your child. If your child is tired then rest is needed and you should give him or her time to rest.

4. Be present as much as you can.It is important to show your support. You are the source of your child's security and inspiration and your presence is crucial to make you childfeel safe and confident. Being there reassures your child that everything is okay and that you are there when he or she needs you.

Acting for kids can be more difficult than acting for adults. But with the right preparations and support from parents, acting can be quite fun and exciting for kids. Just remember that your child is still more of a child than an actor. A healthy childhood still matters very much.

Sale of goods act

Sale of goods act

All car buyers negotiate with car dealers.Before stepping foot inside a dealership you should know your rights as a consumer.The Sale of Goods Act is full of useful information you will need as a car buyer.Below you will find the steps you need to follow in case a car dealer tries to violate your rights as a consumer.

LEGISLATION

The Sale of Goods Act covers a customer's rights as they pertain to vehicle purchase.It also defines a car dealership's responsibilities should a vehicle need to be returned.

AGREEMENT OR CONTRACT

Vehicles are defined by their make,model,color and design among other things.These and other details must be listed on a contract.The condition or quality of the vehicle must also be listed.The contract will serve as evidence should you need to prove you were defrauded.You have the right to sue if your vehicle should become unreliable within a few months of purchase.The contract will also be useful when applying for vehicle insurance.

You should make sure that your signature as well as the car dealers(Do you know that the term in Danish is Bil forhandlere) appears on the contract.The UCC(Uniform Commercial Code) states that any item over 0 must have a contract with both the buyer and seller's signature.If you do not have a contract with both signatures you will not be able to sue should the car dealer violate your rights.

VALID LEGAL OPTIONS

Any consumer who purchases a vehicle has the option to return it within six months if the item shows signs of prior damage or other technical problems.You can get a replacement,return the vehicle or request a refund,as long as the damage was not caused by a car accident.If the dealership refuses to honor the contract and you feel as if your rights have been violated,you may sue for what is considered a breach of warranty.

By law dealerships must disclose all details regarding the vehicles they are selling.Whether these issues are safety concerns or minor cosmetic damage.As a consumer you should know the contents of the Sale of Goods Act to protect your rights.By knowing your rights you will be able to fight for justice and avoid fraud should any of these issues arise between you and the car dealer.

It is very important to remember that any claim or prosecution can be time consuming and costly.

Not only will you have to pay for legal representation but you may well be without a car while the matter is settled in court and this could take months or even years.

For this very reason it is also your duty of care to have the car checked out professionally. If the dealership refuse for an independent inspection to be carried out then walk away. There would be some reason why they refused. Follow your gut instinct as you would normally be right. Ensure you have done all you can to have the car checked out and prevent extra cost and time wasted in disputes as normally it will you who pays the higher price in the long run.

Jeffrey Tambor gave an acting workshop at the South By Southwest Film Festival. Using actors Greta Gerwig & Kent Osbourne, he shows the audience how to give a good performance.

The Hipaa Privacy Act

The Hipaa Privacy Act Although we greatly value our privacy, we have often taken it for granted. Internet and technology advancements have made it more and more difficult to protect. This is precisely why Congress determined that it was time to legislate some privacy guidelines in certain areas. Therefore, in 1996 the HIPAA privacy rules were born.

In 2003 the HIPAA Privacy Act began taking effect. The entities included under this rule were most healthcare providers, health plans, and healthcare clearing houses. The legislation ruled that most of these entities were now going to be required to take measures to protect the privacy of the people they were in business with. Whatever may be termed Protected Health Information (PHI) must be kept private. PHI is a fairly murky term, meaning any information that could possible identify the patient or the history of their health in any way.

This could include:
- The name of the patient
- The social security number of the patient
- The patient's contact information
- Conversations between the Doctor and the patient
- Prescription information
- Billing information
- Health records
- Insurance records

Additionally, the HIPAA Privacy Act states who the PHI can be disclosed to and when. Any time a patient requests to see their own information it must be provided to them within 30 days. There are also instances when PHI will be required to be disclosed by law (such as suspected child abuse cases).Entities may also disclose PHI when attempting to collect payment, provided they have the individual's authorization.

There is a lot that goes into protecting an individual's privacy under the HIPAA Privacy requirements. Every entity would be well advised to choose someone to be a privacy officer. This person should oversee the privacy rules that are set and practiced where they are located. The chosen privacy officer should be responsible for training any and all employees on what is considered to be standard protocol as well as any changes made to procedures. The privacy of the individual should be insured by taking several precautions. Keep in mind that there are things that can be done which are as easy as keeping patient charts closed and out of view from other patients. The only information that staff members should be allowed to access is the information they need to do their job. For example, nurses have no need to see the billing information for a patient they are treating, but another employee would need to see the billing information and not their treatment information. To help stay within the guidelines, require passwords to gain access to private information stored on computers and put locks on any cabinets or rooms containing PHI.

Making sense of the HIPAA Privacy Act can seem like a daunting task. This is why it would be a smart decision to seek help when creating your HIPAA Privacy procedures. The HIPAA Software is a perfect source to get some assistance with creating a manual that is specific to the needs of your entity.

Even though you have got yourself an acting coach, it does not mean you will be seeing dramatic improvements in your acting abilities. The coach will teach you a variety of fine tricks and tips that bring out the depth of your acting skills. For this, you will need to improve your techniques, which could well take more than 6 months. So, it is important to be patient. If you are seeking advanced courses, you are likely to see results more quickly.

However, acting coaches are generally quite expensive. Since Hollywood is a place that attracts many wannabe actors and actresses, the best acting coaches are taken quite early on. So you might want to get there early and with cash to spare.

If you cannot afford an acting coach, your next step is to enroll yourself into an acting class. These are more affordable. Even if you are working part-time, you can find affordable acting classes in Hollywood that offer training over the weekends or in the evenings.

Discovering if the Method Acting Schools London Offers are a Good Match for your Talents

Discovering if the Method Acting Schools London Offers are a Good Match for your Talents

Article by Carol Williams

Successful acting requires the presentation of a believable illusion; the audience must be convinced that the actor is the character being portrayed. Method acting allows actors to fully internalize and immerse themselves in their character in order to successfully portray the role. Highly successful professional actors must master the art of method acting, a skill involving a vivid imagination, deep psychological insight, and superior memory.

Because actors must be able to adapt to a variety of characters, settings, and plots, having an imaginative and creative mind as well as quick memory recall are essential. Given that this form of acting involves examining the emotional and psychological state of the character, method actors must be able to draw from personal circumstances and memories to identify with and accurately become the character. Method actors must constantly examine their own emotional and sensory memories in order to understand and relay the character's emotional state. What better way to realistically portraying a character than to draw upon personal circumstances and memories to identify with and accurately become the character?

Unfortunately, dreaming about becoming a famous actor is not enough to enter into this competitive field. Even aspiring actors who are gifted with creative and imaginative minds need thorough instruction in the art of method acting in order to launch into a professional career. If you find yourself longing to become a Hollywood star, Broadway performer, or London actor, consider attending acting school. Gifted, driven, and focused individuals desiring to learn the skills of method acting and pursue a professional career should thoroughly examine their options when selecting a school.

Of all the schools in the world, the acting schools London offers provide students with the most culturally setting in which to pursue their dream. Students attending London schools have access to world-class professors and can study in the backdrop of rich, centuries-old theatrical history. Many of the best acting schools London has teach students the art and skills involved with method acting. Using a variety of techniques and procedures such as affective memory, sense memory, concentration, and substitution, acting instructors in many London schools teach students to learn the art of method acting.

Even if you do not currently live in the UK, you can take advantage of social media outlets and internet research to learn about the advantages of the many acting acting schools London offers. Just as an actor seeks to understand the emotions and psychological state of his character in order to portray him in a convincing manner, you, too, should search your soul, internalize your acting goal, and passionately pursue making your dream a reality.

The author, Carol Williams, is a successful actress that has performed throughout Europe and the United states. In addition to her acting performances, she has taught the Method at various acting schools over the past 20 years. Although many of the acting schools London offers claim to be experts in training, Carol encourages students to only consider schools that teach the Method.

Affordable Care Act

Affordable Care Act As part of a larger Administration announcement on efforts to strengthen the health care workforce, the Internal Revenue Service today announced that under the Affordable Care Act health care professionals who received student loan relief under state programs that reward those who work in underserved communities may qualify for refunds on their 2009 federal income tax returns as well as an annual tax cut going forward.
Doctors and nurses who choose to practice in underserved areas make a great contribution to their local communities, Commissioner Doug Shulman said. By expanding the tax exclusion for student loan forgiveness, the Affordable Care Act provides an even greater incentive to practice medicine in areas that need it most.
The Affordable Care Act included a change in the law, effective in 2009, that expands a tax exclusion for amounts received by health professionals under loan repayment and forgiveness programs. Prior to the new law, only amounts received under the National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment Program or certain state loan repayment programs eligible for funding under the Public Health Service Act qualified for a tax exclusion.
The Affordable Care Act expands this tax exclusion to include any state loan repayment or loan forgiveness programs intended to increase the availability of health care services in underserved areas or health professional shortage areas and makes this exclusion retroactive to the 2009 tax year.
Health care professionals participating in these programs who have reported income from repaid or forgiven loan amounts on their 2009 returns, possibly after receiving a Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement, or Form 1099, may be due refunds. Those who believe they qualify for this relief may want to consult their state loan program offices to determine whether the program is covered by the new law.
Health care professionals may request an employer or other issuer to provide a Form W-2c, Corrected Wage and Tax Statement, or 1099 and may attach the corrected form to the Form 1040X. However, the Form 1040X may also be filed without attaching a corrected form.
An individual whose employer withheld and paid taxes under the Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) on payments covered under the new exclusion may request that the employer seek a refund of withheld FICA on the employees behalf. And because employers also pay a portion of the FICA tax, the employer also may also be entitled to a refund.
To obtain a refund, an employer should file a separate Form 941-X,Adjusted Employer's QUARTERLY Federal Tax Return or Claim for Refund for each Form 941, Employers Quarterly Federal Tax Return, which needs to be corrected. An employer filing a Form 941-X is also required to file a Form W-2c for each employee who benefits from the exclusion.

Fair Housing Act

Fair Housing Act

In the United States of America, there are laws which aim to eradicate any sort of discrimination form the society. In such a case, housing is no different. The Fair Housing act is one such law, which was passed by the congress as early as in 1968. The primary aim of the act is to eradicate any sort of discrimination to a citizen, desirous of either renting in or buying a house, due to any factors like caste, creed, economical status, color and even sex. Basically, this act is an extension of a thought process that evolved in the 19th century and looked to give an equal chance to all as far dwelling opportunities are concerned. At that point of time, it was more popularly called open housing.

Presently, the act is in full force in all states and is strictly enforced. The Housing and urban development department is primarily responsible for the upkeep of this law and any complaints related to such discrimination is normally acted upon by this department.

It has more than fifty offices across the country and is taken care of by more than five hundred staff members.

The law has a history to its making. During the 1950s, there was a feeling that equal opportunities should be granted to all as far as dwelling facilities are concerned. This led to the formation of a body, who took on the powerful lobby of real estate industry, which tended to discriminate as far as selling houses were concerned. Though this dialogue did not have any specific effect, it tended to open a thought process about fair housing. Instead of passing legislation to this effect, the issue was doing the corridors of powers trying to be swept under the carpet. But, on 28th August, 1963, there was a huge demonstration by the public of Seattle asking for fair housing rights. This led to the desired effect. The Seattle human rights commission recommended an ordinance against such discriminatory policies in housing.

Different applications and countless numbers of demonstrations later, the government finally woke upto the fact that housing is one of the basic needs of a man and cannot be discriminated based on any criterion. Thus was born the Fair Housing Act of 1968.

A clear look at the history of mankind will show that housing has always been discriminated upon, especially by lobbies advocating for caste colonies and economical groups. Such kinds always find excuses to live with their own brethren or amongst the same social class, thereby ostracizing the poor or neglected classes of society. It is high time that such old thoughts are banished from the society and oneness be embraced for a better society, unaffected by the caste, creed or economical class divisions.

ACT Vs SAT match

ACT Vs SAT match

ACT and SAT are the must to apply for almost every college. Many of these can be completed during the Junior or Senior year in high school or redone if necessary. But the thing is which test takes you to a better school? And what is the difference?

The ACT test has four multiple choice subject tests that cover English, Reading, Match & Science. The test takes about 2 hours and 55 minutes to complete. Scores are then determined after throwing out any wrong answers.

The SAT is designed less on specific academics, but more on writing and critical thinking. The first section of the SAT is a 25-minute essay. Afterwards there is a multiple choice test in critical reading and mathematics.

The top score for the SAT is 1600 (800 points for each section), and the ACT composite score maximum is 36.

If there is a specific school that you're interested in, you may want to consider looking at which test is required by the school.

Many schools will accept both test scores, so it's recommended that students take both exams.

There are test preparations that you can take to make sure you receive the highest score possible to help you get into the college you want. These can be done through books or classes that are usually held on weekends or evenings. Studying could be very helpful in achieving the highest score, and thus, help you get into the best school possible.

In-Depth Bible Study Notes for Acts 8:26-40

In-Depth Bible Study Notes for Acts 8:26-40

Read Acts 8:26.  One commentary I read on this verse says there is some question as to if this should read "the angel of the Lord", which is believed to have the same meaning as the Holy Spirit.  So whether an angel spoke to Philip or the Spirit spoke to him is unclear, but the message was obviously from God.  { Show map from "The Macmillan Bible Atlas" by Aharoni & Avi-Yonah, map 241 }

Read Acts 8:27-28. "So he started out" - notice how Philip obeys God without question, without knowing anything of what is going to happen next! He is a true man of faith and one we should all want to emulate.

To understand the incredible richness of this story, we need to understand a little bit of the history of the time. First off, in the New Testament, the term "Ethiopia" corresponded to the kingdom of Nubia or Kush, in the upper Nile (Sudan) region. To be a bit more specific, this man probably came from the kingdom of Meroe, whose capital was near the 6th cataract on the Nile. { Show map from "National Geographic, November 1990"} As we can see, this man traveled a long way to Jerusalem. His journey would have taken weeks, if not months, even by combination of chariot and boat. The kingdom of Meroe flourished for about a thousand years from 650 BC to AD 350. The word "Candace" is not a name like Gail or Lisa, but rather a title given to the queen mothers of Meroe. Interestingly it is believed that the queens of Meroe were the ones primarily responsible for the secular duties of the court, the kings being too important to bother with such things.

The man held a position of great honor, of that of treasurer, and here he is called an eunuch. Now whether he was physically a eunuch is uncertain (though I tend to believe he was, because of the passage he was studying as we will discuss later) since in oriental culture this term was used for high officials.

The passage here says he had gone to Jerusalem to worship. This implies that he honors the One True God. If he is physically an eunuch, the Old Testament laws prohibits him from joining in with worship. Read Deuteronomy 23:1. It is possible, however, that he held on to the promised blessings given in Isaiah to eunuchs and foreigners as a sign he would not be excluded from God's grace. Read Isaiah 56:4-7. So even if the Ethiopian is not a full-fledged convert to Judaism, he is clearly what one would call a Gentile God-fearer. As a side note, I found it extremely interesting that someone who lives so far away from Judea could know so much about Judaism, but then I remembered that by this time we know there are Jewish communities in Alexandria { Show map again from National Geographic } so it makes sense to assume that Jewish people continued to migrate south and that as a royal official he would have come in contact with Jews and learned about Yahweh and the Old Testament that way. He must have been highly educated to not only be able to read, but to also read in Aramaic, which is the language the Old Testament would have been written in.

One article I read online suggested that there was far more to his reasoning for leaving his homeland and taking this difficult journey than simply to visit the temple. As a royal treasurer, I doubt he could simply take off months of a time for personal reasons. At about this time, historians believe, Herod Agrippa the First was installed as the independent king of Judea. It makes sense, therefore, that the kingdom of Meroe would send a representative to congratulate the new king of Judea, for political reasons. As this man not only spoke and read Aramaic, but was also probably known to honor Jewish religion, he was probably the logical person to send (if he didn't in fact volunteer; to be able to visit the temple at Jerusalem, the center of all Judaism, would have been a once in a life-time achievement.)

Read Acts 8:29.  Here the Bible makes it clear that it is the Spirit, not an angel, who speaks to Philip.  I would be interested to know if Philip heard an actual voice or if he simply felt a strong impression in his own spirit that this was what he was supposed to do.  { Ask the group if they had ever had ever felt a strong impression put upon them that they were supposed to do something and how they felt, later, if they disobeyed. Some times the Spirit does speak in an audible voice, sometimes with impressions.}

Read Acts 8:30-31. In my little bit of digging online I've discovered that entire sermons have been based on this short passage. I'm not going to try to reproduce those sermons, but rather summarize what other people have focused in on here. One pastor zoomed in on Philip's boldness and that we should all try to emulate him in sharing the gospel to friends and strangers alike: Perhaps for Philip, with his gift of evangelism, it was easy for him to run up to a stranger's chariot (a chariot of someone of obviously high rank) and speak to the official, but I think I'd need a lot of pushing and prodding from the Spirit before I would be that bold! I have a hard enough time sharing the gospel with friends, not to say strangers! But God clearly calls us to be bold, like Philip here.

Another writer focused in on the fact that the eunuch was so obviously seeking God by spending his time reading the Old Testament, specifically the prophet Isaiah. He didn't fully understand what he was reading, but something in his spirit responded to Isaiah's words and he knew he wanted something more. Application: are we spending time in the Word? Even when we don't fully understand it, are we thirsty to learn more about God?

And finally, another writer focused on the eunuch's attitude of humility and teachability. He could easily have been insulted by Philip's question: "Do you understand what you are reading?" After all he was a man of high standing and Philip (undoubtedly dusty from his walking & running) most likely looked something of a poor vagabond, not someone worth of association. But the eunuch admits his lack of understanding and is open to receive teaching. Understanding the Bible takes diligent study and a teachable spirit. Actually reading it is a start, but there is so much more involved. I find it extremely ironic that the American church today, one of the most highly educated churches of all time, with all the Bible resources available to us, is probably one of the most Biblical ignorant since the dark ages.

But what passage was the eunuch actually studying? Read Acts 8:32-35. As a personal note, one of the reasons why I think this man may have been a physical eunuch (and not just a royal official) is because of what he was studying here. This passage in Isaiah speaks of the Messiah dying without descendants, something which was considered a great tragedy in that culture. To not to be able to have children, through no fault of your own, but rather at the hands of others, may have caused great emotional pain to this man. He, too, may have felt humiliated and deprived of justice, because of what was done to him against his will. I know, just personal supposition, but one can't help but wonder.

Philip uses this opportunity to share Christ with this man, using this particular passage as the starting point. When you share with someone, you start with where they are spiritually and work with that. My sense is that this man was knowledgeable in the Old Testament and Philip would have shared other verses to confirm what he was saying about Jesus. Philip was ready, he knew his Old Testament, and the Spirit worked in him to bring those verses to life. (Remember, there was no New Testament yet - only the Old Testament and the spoken testimonies of the apostles and other believers.)

Read Acts 8:36-37. Depending on your Bible, you may not have verse 37 included. That is because verse 37 is found only in later manuscripts, not in all versions. Verse 37 reads "Philip said, "if you believe with all your heart, you may". The eunuch answered, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God." I think that the omission of this verse doesn't really damage the power or meaning of the story. The fact that the eunuch wanted to be water baptized is a clear indication that he has accepted Christ in his heart and wants to make an outward show of it, through baptism.

How differently this man responds from the Sanhedrin at Stephen's trial! Those men were probably as knowledgeable or more so than the eunuch, they are presented Scripture as a strong basis to convict them of their sin, Stephen shares with and in the power of the Holy Spirit, yet their response is to stone the messenger! This Gentile, this physically imperfect man denied access to Jewish worship because of human grounds, has such a soft, tender heart for God that he recognizes very quickly the truth of Philip's words and comes to Christ.

I think that Philip would have probably presented a very Biblical strong case not only to win this man to Christ, but also to prepare him to pass on this same teaching onto others, later. Remember, he was returning home to a culture where he would probably be the only believer for quite some time and all he would have to live on was what he learned from Philip, from this short teaching.

Read Acts 8:38-39. There is a lot going on here in this short passage. First off, it helps support how important water baptism is to the Christian walk. It is a physical act demonstrating a change of heart. However, note that there is NO MENTION of Philip laying hands on the eunuch and praying for him to receive the Holy Spirit! No mention of the Ethiopian speaking in tongues, no mention of other physical manifestations beyond the man going home rejoicing. They come out of the water and the Holy Spirit teleports Philip away! As the Ethiopian was going home to a culture in which he would probably be the only Christian, is seems to support the belief that no second baptism of the Holy Spirit is required in order to be a fully empowered follower of Christ. If such was necessary, I don't understand why God would take the man's mentor away, before he was prepared to survive alone spiritually. (Something to think about, anyway.)

Why did the Lord take Philip away so dramatically? I think that is pretty obvious - as a witness to the eunuch that the decision he had made was the right one and that what he had learned from Philip was true. He would now have a strong witness (confirmed by his chariot driver) to share with his people.

Read Acts 8:40. Azotus is the New Testament name of the Philistine city Ashdod in the Old Testament. { Show map from "The Macmillan Bible Atlas" by Aharoni & Avi-Yonah, map 241 } The account leaves Philip in Caesarea at this time; it is 20 years later until we hear from him again, and he is still located in the same place. Read Acts 21:8. When we study the story of Cornelius the Centurion in Acts 10, we'll learn more about what the city of Caesarea was like.

The story of Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch demonstrates an important truth about God's love: it is available for all. He does not discriminate on any human grounds such as ethnicity or physical handicaps.

Blessings!
